The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that stabilize the shoulder joint. Since the shoulder is a highly movable joint, the muscles of the rotator cuff work very hard to maintain stability. When these muscles are stressed repetitively or are not functioning properly, the result can be rotator cuff syndrome. The term rotator cuff syndrome is a generalization meaning there is a problem with the muscles leading to symptoms such as inflammation, pain, and decreased mobility of the shoulder.
One of the muscles in particular, supraspinatus, can play a major role in the problem. The supraspinatus muscle has a long tendon that goes through the shoulder joint. This tendon can become impinged or compressed within the joint and cause significant pain and inflammation throughout the shoulder region.
The laser therapy can be focused on the muscles and their tendons, the surrounding inflamed area and even the nerves that innervate the muscles. Treating these areas can decrease the amount of pain and inflammation.
