Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition in which the median nerve is compressed as it runs through a ligamentous tunnel of the wrist. The nerve controls muscles of the hand, especially the thumb, index and middle fingers. It supplies some of the sensation to the hand as well. CTS can cause a variety of symptoms including numbness, tingling, and/or a burning sensation (“hands falling asleep”), and loss of motor control (dropping things or unable to do small tasks with fingers). When there is compression by the tunnel, the nerve and surrounding area become irritated and inflamed. This helps explain why some people experience increased disco mfort with certain activities and at night after using their hands all day. With the laser therapy, both the nerve and the area of compression can be treated to decrease inflammation and calm the nerve down as to decrease symptoms.
